How to Plan for College Dance Team Clinics Without Attending Every One

A grade-by-grade guide to clinic season, plus a worksheet to help you decide where to go. College dance team clinics can help you explore programs, meet coaches, and find your fit but planning looks different at every grade level. This guide shares advice for freshmen through seniors, plus a downloadable worksheet to help you weigh recruiting goals, costs, and scheduling conflicts.

Fall fills up fast. Between studio training, school, football games, school events, and college dance team clinics, even the most organized dancer cannot be everywhere. If you cannot make a clinic at a school you like, do not panic. Coaches know how busy this season is. Let the coach know you were interested, share a brief update, and ask whether there will be another chance to connect.

The harder part is often deciding which clinics are worth making room for. That decision looks different for a freshman exploring college dance than it does for a senior weighing a serious recruiting opportunity.

We have already done much of the event search for you. S2S Premium members can find upcoming college dance team clinics in one place, see the event details, and follow the links to register. Use those listings to see what is coming up, then use our College Dance Clinic Planning Guide and Decision Filter to decide which visits make sense for you. The worksheet is linked with this blog and can be filled out digitally or printed.

Freshmen: Go to learn

You do not need a final college list in ninth grade. Start with a few local clinics, even if you are not sure those schools will eventually make your list. Notice how the day is run, which skills the team works on, how quickly you pick up choreography, and how you feel in the room.

If an out-of-state trip works for your family, it can show you a different campus and team environment. If travel is not realistic right now, local clinics are still a great place to start. There is no need to chase every event on the calendar.

Your focus: Get comfortable in the college clinic environment and learn what you want to work on.

Sophomores: Start recognizing fit

Begin building a working list of roughly five to ten programs you are genuinely curious about. It is a starting point, not a commitment.

After a clinic, ask yourself more than whether you danced well. Did you like the campus? Did the coach’s teaching style work for you? Did the team make you feel welcomed? Could you see yourself thriving at that school as a student, even on days without dance?

Your list can change. Coaching staffs change, teams evolve, and your priorities will become clearer as you grow. You are learning how to recognize a fit, not predicting your future perfectly.

Your focus: Narrow your options based on the whole school and the team experience.

Juniors: Invest in getting on campus

Junior year is a good time to prioritize in-person visits to programs you could realistically see yourself attending, if time and finances allow. Use a clinic to learn about the team, meet people face to face, and experience the school beyond its social media posts.

Summer before senior year matters, too. If you plan to submit a Common Recruit Video by the September 1 deadline, you may not have another fall clinic before that submission. A junior-year or summer visit gives you a chance to get on campus beforehand.

You do not have to travel to every school. Look through the upcoming clinics on S2S, identify the visits that would answer your biggest questions, and keep sharing current footage and updates with programs you cannot visit yet.

Your focus: Enter senior year with firsthand knowledge of your strongest options.

Seniors: Make the hard calendar choices intentionally

A clinic at a school you are seriously pursuing might fall on homecoming weekend or your last home football game. Those moments matter. Sometimes, though, being on campus with a program you care about is worth missing another event. There is no universal answer; think about how important this opportunity is to you and whether you may have another chance to visit.

A video shows your dancing. In person, a coach can see how you take corrections, interact with current team members, and respond in the team’s own environment. You get to see how you feel there, too. That time can help both sides picture whether the fit makes sense.

If you have submitted a video or been released from a team, keep training and keep your options open. Plans can change because of finances, admissions, injuries, or dancers choosing a different path. Look at schools that hold auditions, and continue building respectful, professional relationships with coaches.

It is okay to attend clinics at more than one school. Coaches understand that dancers are exploring their options; you do not need to hide it. If you are already in serious conversations with a program and expect an offer soon, be thoughtful before booking other clinics simply to keep collecting options. The college dance community is small, and the way you handle those relationships matters.

Your focus: Choose visits that move a real decision forward, and keep improving regardless of the outcome of one submission.

Turn a clinic list into a plan

Once you find an event you are considering in S2S Premium’s upcoming clinic listings, open the College Dance Clinic Planning Guide and Decision Filter linked with this post. For each school, it walks you through four questions:

  1. Could you see yourself attending this college beyond dance?

  2. Does the team and coaching environment feel like a place you could grow?

  3. Would an in-person visit help you and the coach evaluate the fit?

  4. Can you manage the cost, travel, and what you would miss to attend?

The worksheet helps you weigh your answers and choose a next step: attend, look for another date, or stay in touch. Its score is a guide, not a rule. If a school is not a good academic fit or a trip is not financially workable, pay attention to that, no matter how exciting the team looks online.

You do not win clinic season by attending the most clinics. You make progress when each visit helps you learn something, build a genuine connection, and get closer to a program where you can thrive.
