Think Like a Coach Before You Submit Your Common Recruit Video
Learn how to review your Common Recruit video like a coach. Understand what coaches look for and submit with clarity, confidence, and intention.
January 1st is coming quickly and it’s easy to rush.
Take a breath. Make sure the video you’re submitting actually represents you.
Here are a few things to think about first.
Your intro matters more than you think
Coaches aren’t just listening for your name and where you dance.
They’re trying to understand:
Do you know WHY you want to be on a college team?
Will you fit into their team culture and represent the university well?
What kind of teammate are you?
Smile. Be natural. Let them see who you are as a person, not just a dancer.
Your combos should match the programs you’re targeting
Coaches are looking for dancers that are going to easily adapt to their teams styles and expectations.
Before you choose or create combos, study the programs you’re interested in:
How do they move?
Is their style sharp, grounded, fluid, athletic?
What does performance energy look like on their team?
Do they prioritize precision, power, musicality, or showmanship?
You’re not trying to copy a team but you are showing that you can adapt, blend, and match.
If your combos look like they belong in a totally different world than the teams you’re aiming for, it may be worth adjusting before you submit.
Remember: the camera is your coach
Make eye contact with the camera. Perform to it. Connect with it.
Coaches should be able to feel:
your presence
your confidence
your energy
If you look unsure on camera, they’ll assume you’ll feel unsure on the floor.
Your filming setup matters
Before recording, check:
clean space
good lighting
full body in frame, filmed horizontally
nothing distracting in mirrors
Make it easy for coaches to watch you, not the background.
Think like a coach. Before you submit ask yourself:
Can a coach immediately identify my strengths?
Is my technique up to target program standards?
Am I showing control, consistency and movement quality?
Would this video help a coach remember me?
Does this align with the style of programs I’m targeting?
Does this show how I would contribute to a team, not just a class?
If the answer is yes, submit with confidence.
If something feels off, adjust. You still have time.
